To the New Official Website of Steve Daley – Europe’s first £1.437 ,500 Million Pound Footballer!

Steve was born in Cudworth, near Barnsley he lived with his parents and older brother before leaving home at age 15 years to realise his boyhood dream of becoming a Professional Footballer.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC recognised his potential talent and nurtured him through his teen years encouraging him to pursue his dream through dedication and hard work.

At age 17 years Steve was signed Professional by Manager Bill McGarry and quickly established himself in the first team squad.  On his debut 9 October 1971 - Steve scored in a 4-2 win against Southampton.  Regular appearances followed, UEFA Cup debut scoring after 17 seconds against Ferencvaros along with representing England at Youth and B level.

It was following his success on the ‘England B Tour’ guided by  B Team Manager Bobby Robson, that Steve was told by Ron Greenwood to keep working hard and a full cap would surely follow.

Transfer rumours grew as rival teams were trying to acquire the up and coming young Wolves star, the price tag rose from £400,000 to 1,437,500 in a relatively short time with Manchester City securing his talents with a 10 year contract on 5 September 1979.

This schoolboy dream was almost fulfilled – A Full England Cap was in his sights!

But in reality dreams can quickly turn into nightmares ……

In the 18 months that followed Steve was faced with the headlines: Million Pound Misfit –White Elephant Man – Biggest Flop in Football History – Manchester City were struggling in the First Division and the man in the firing line was their costliest acquisition – Steve Daley!

A move to Seattle Sounders in the North American Soccer League for a knock down fee of £300,00 provided Steve with a new challenge, a chance to enjoy is football and regain his confidence.

Big names from the World of Soccer were now playing in America; George Best, Carlos Alberto, Pele, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer too many to mention.  The games were exciting, Seattle reached the final of ‘Soccer Bowl’ losing 1-0 to New York Cosmos.  A return to form was rewarded by Steve being selected for the ‘North American Soccer League All Star Team’.

A Brief return to England signing for Burnley FC was followed by a return to the States this time with San Diego Sockers - winners of the MISL.

One last season with Walsall FC in 1984/5 Season  brought Steve back to England and consider what next?  Football had been his life, always part of a team, performing on the world’s largest stage in front of thousands of fans.

An opportunity arose to join a major brewing company ‘Carlsberg Tetley’ an office environment was totally alien, Steve missed the banter of the dressing room but soon knuckled down and became a successful part of a Sales team, winning ‘Salesman of the Year’ the following year.  During this time Steve represented the company at various Sporting Dinners and was intrigued by the stories delivered by After Dinner Speakers.  Steve put pen to paper and soon began performing his own humorous After Dinner Speech which has proved very successful over the past 18 years receiving a hat-trick of cups in recognition of his talents.

It was whilst reflecting this ‘roller coaster’ career that Steve analysed the journey from schoolboy to present day, the insecurity of leaving home at such a young age, the challenges, commitment, dedication, hard work, exhilaration but also the depths of despair as things spiralled out of his control.  He began to compile press cuttings and videos from his personal archives into a Power Point presentation that he is now delivering to schools, colleges and academies throughout the country.  A truly motivational journey achieved by self-belief in his ability to succeed!
